Indications:
● Tamiflu is indicated for treating influenza in patients who have shown symptoms of the flu for no more than 48 hours and for preventing influenza in patients one year and older who have been exposed to influenza but do not yet show symptoms.
Administration Guidelines
Dosage
● Adults and Children 13 years and older: 75 mg twice daily for 5 days for treatment; 75 mg once daily for 10 days for prevention.
● Children (weight-based dosing may vary): Dosage varies; typically 30 mg to 75 mg twice daily for treatment depending on body weight.
Method of Administration
● Capsules: Taken orally with or without food.
● Oral Suspension: Measured and taken according to the prescribed dose using a dosing syringe or cup.
Dosage Form
Tamiflu is available as:
● 30 mg, 45 mg, and 75 mg capsules
● Powder for oral suspension, which once prepared, contains 6 mg per ml oseltamivir base.
Safety Preclusions
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
● Tamiflu should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is unknown whether Tamiflu is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when it is administered to a nursing mother.
Long-term Use
● There are no known risks associated with long-term usage of Tamiflu as it is generally used only for short treatment periods. It is not intended for long-term use.
Drug Interactions
● Significant drug interactions with Tamiflu include live attenuated influenza vaccine. Tamiflu may inhibit the action of the vaccine if administered within two weeks before or 48 hours after the vaccine is given.
