Indications:
● The primary use of Sumatriptan is for the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura and the treatment of cluster headaches in adults.
Administration Guidelines
Dosage
● If taken orally for migraines, the recommended adult dose is a single tablet of 25mg, 50mg, or 100mg taken as soon as symptoms appear. If symptoms persist or return, a second dose may be administered after at least 2 hours, not exceeding 200mg in 24 hours.
Method of Administration
● Oral Tablets: Swallow the tablet whole with water; do not crush or chew.
● Nasal Spray: Administered as a single spray into one nostril.
● Subcutaneous Injection: Injected into the skin, usually at the onset of symptoms.

● Sumatriptan is available as oral tablets, a nasal spray, and a subcutaneous injection.
Safety Preclusions
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
● Sumatriptan falls under Federal Health Authority pregnancy category C and should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Sumatriptan is excreted in human breast milk; hence, caution should be exercised when administered to breastfeeding women.
Long-term Use
● The long-term use of Sumatriptan has not been extensively studied. Its use should be limited to actual migraine or cluster headache episodes.
Drug Interactions
● Combination of Sumatriptan with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, other triptans, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Patients should report all their current medications to their healthcare provider.
