Description
Atacand operates by selectively inhibiting the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor, found in many tissues such as vascular smooth muscles and the adrenal gland. This inhibition prevents the vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) and aldosterone-secreting effects induced by angiotensin II. As a result, candesartan causes a dose-dependent, long-lasting reduction in arterial blood pressure. Its use for heart failure is based on its ability to decrease the resistance that the heart has to work against to pump blood and to reduce the progression of heart failure.
