Usage

Indications:

● Acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura.
● Offers relief from headache phase of the migraine attack.

Patients should:

● Adhere to the prescribed dosage by the healthcare provider.
● Take the medication at the first sign of a migraine headache.
● Avoid operating heavy machinery or driving as Maxalt might cause dizziness.
● Inform their healthcare provider if there's a history of high blood pressure, heart disease, liver or kidney issues before taking Maxalt.

Administration:

Maxalt is available in tablet form and as an orally disintegrating tablet (Maxalt-MLT):

● For the tablet, ingest with water or other liquid.
● For Maxalt-MLT, place the tablet on the tongue and allow it to dissolve, then swallow with or without water.
● Do not take more than instructed in 24 hours.

Precautions:

● Not recommended for patients with certain cardiovascular conditions due to the risk of coronary artery vasospasm.
● Regular monitoring is suggested for patients with risk factors for heart disease.
● Should not be administered within 24 hours of another triptan or ergot-type medication.

Drug Interactions:

● Be cautious of interactions with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), and other drugs that can affect serotonin levels.

Side Effects

● Dizziness
● Fatigue
● Dry mouth
● Nausea or vomiting
● Somnolence

Serious side effects requiring immediate medical attention:

● Signs of heart attack (pain, pressure, or tightness in jaw, neck, chest)
● Stroke symptoms (sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body)
● High blood pressure (severe headache, blurred vision)
● Serotonin syndrome (agitation, hallucinations, fever, fast heart rate)

Storage

● Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep out of the reach of children.

Overdose
