● Nasal Spray: Administered as a single spray into one nostril.
● Subcutaneous Injection: Injected into the skin, usually at the onset of symptoms.
Dosage Form
● Sumatriptan is available as oral tablets, a nasal spray, and a subcutaneous injection.
Safety Preclusions
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
● Sumatriptan falls under FDA pregnancy category C and should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Sumatriptan is excreted in human breast milk; hence, caution should be exercised when administered to breastfeeding women.
Long-term Use
● The long-term use of Sumatriptan has not been extensively studied. Its use should be limited to actual migraine or cluster headache episodes.
Drug Interactions
● Combination of Sumatriptan with monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, other triptans, or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) may increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Patients should report all their current medications to their healthcare provider.
