Latanoprost, a prostaglandin F2α analogue, is a potent ocular hypotensive agent. It works by mimicking the body’s own prostaglandins, substances that increase the drainage of the aqueous humor out of the eye, lowering IOP. The mechanism is primarily through increased uveoscleral outflow, and it is one of the first-line treatments for glaucoma.
Xalatan, known by its generic name, latanoprost, is an ophthalmic solution widely used to treat elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) in individuals with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. By increasing the outflow of aqueous humor from the eye, it effectively reduces the pressure inside the eye, which if left untreated, can lead to damage of the optic nerve and vision loss.
| Storage | ● Once opened, Xalatan bottles should be stored at 2° to 25°C (36° to 77°F) and should be discarded after 6 weeks of opening due to the lack of preservatives to prevent contamination. |

| Special Precautions | ● Xalatan patients should have regular follow-up appointments to monitor IOP and eye health. Those scheduled for eye surgery should inform their surgeon about their latanoprost use. Contact lens wearers should remove their lenses before applying latanoprost drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them. |
| Overdose | ● An overdose of this medication may be flushed out of the eye(s) with warm tap water. Although an overdose is unlikely to be dangerous, patients should seek medical attention if they experience severe discomfort or ill effects after applying too much of the solution. |
