Zolmitriptan is prescribed to alleviate the symptoms associated with migraine headaches, which are characterized by severe throbbing head pain, often accompanied by nausea and heightened sensitivity to sound and light. This medication falls under the category of selective serotonin receptor agonists. Its mechanism of action involves the constriction of blood vessels in the brain, interrupting the transmission of pain signals to the brain, and inhibiting the release of specific natural substances responsible for causing pain, nausea, and other migraine symptoms. It’s important to note that Zolmitriptan does not serve as a preventive measure for migraine attacks or a means to reduce the frequency of headaches.

Additional information

Usage

Usage
Zolmitriptan is available in two forms: as a tablet and an orally disintegrating tablet, which quickly dissolves in the mouth. It is typically taken at the onset of a migraine headache. If your symptoms improve but return after 2 hours or more, you may consider taking a second tablet. However, if your symptoms persist after the initial dose, refrain from taking another tablet without consulting your doctor. Your healthcare provider will specify the maximum number of tablets or orally disintegrating tablets you can use within 24 hours.
Please adhere to the instructions on your prescription label meticulously, and don't hesitate to seek clarification from your healthcare provider or pharmacist regarding any unclear aspects. Take Zolmitriptan precisely as directed, avoiding both overuse and underuse. The first dose of Zolmitriptan may be administered under medical supervision in a doctor's office or similar healthcare facility to monitor for potential severe reactions.
If your doctor has prescribed a dose lower than 2.5 mg, you may use your fingers to split the 2.5 mg tablet along the dividing line. Nonetheless, avoid breaking or splitting the orally disintegrating tablet. To consume the orally disintegrating tablet, use dry hands to peel back the foil packaging, remove the tablet, and place it on your tongue. It will dissolve rapidly and can be swallowed with saliva. No water is required to ingest disintegrating tablets. Only open the foil packaging and remove the tablet just before taking it.
Contact your doctor if your migraines do not improve or become more frequent after using Zolmitriptan. Exceeding the recommended duration or frequency of Zolmitriptan intake may exacerbate your headaches. It is advisable not to use Zolmitriptan or any other headache medication for more than 10 days per month. If you require Zolmitriptan for the treatment of more than three headaches in a single month, consult your doctor for guidance. Feel free to request a copy of the manufacturer's information for the patient from your pharmacist or doctor.

Precaution

Precaution
Before using zolmitriptan:
1. Inform your doctor and pharmacist about any allergies to zolmitriptan, other medications, or the ingredients in zolmitriptan tablets or orally disintegrating tablets. Request a list of these ingredients from your pharmacist.
2. Do not take zolmitriptan if you've used any of the following medications within the past 24 hours: other selective serotonin receptor agonists (like almotriptan, eletriptan, frovatriptan, naratriptan, rizatriptan, or sumatriptan); or ergot-type medications (such as bromocriptine, dihydroergotamine, ergoloid mesylates, ergonovine, ergotamine, methylergonovine, methysergide, or pergolide).
3. Do not take zolmitriptan if you are using or have taken a monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) inhibitor (like isocarboxazid, phenelzine, or tranylcypromine) within the past 2 weeks.
4. Discuss with your doctor and pharmacist any prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, supplements, or herbal products you are currently taking or plan to take. Mention acetaminophen, antidepressants, aspirin, NSAIDs, cimetidine, oral contraceptives, propranolol, SSRIs, and SNRIs among others. Adjustments to your medication doses may be needed, or close monitoring for side effects.
5. Inform your doctor of any history of heart disease, heart attack, angina, irregular heartbeats, stroke, circulation issues (such as varicose veins, blood clots, Raynaud's disease, or ischemic bowel disease), or any related conditions, as they may advise against using zolmitriptan.

7. If you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, notify your doctor. Discuss effective birth control methods if you intend to be sexually active while on this medication.
8. Be aware that zolmitriptan may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you understand how it affects you.
9. Consult your doctor to confirm that your headache symptoms are related to migraines. Zolmitriptan is not suitable for certain migraine types (like hemiplegic or basilar) or other headache varieties (such as cluster headaches).
10. Individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU, an inherited condition requiring a specialized diet to prevent mental retardation) should note that the orally disintegrating tablets contain aspartame, which forms phenylalanine.
