Brimonidine tartrate specifically targets alpha-2 adrenergic receptors in the eye, reducing aqueous humor production and increasing uveoscleral outflow. This dual action effectively lowers intraocular pressure, making it a valuable option for patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Its localized action minimizes systemic side effects, making it suitable for long-term use in managing these conditions.

Description

Brimonidine, with its active ingredient brimonidine tartrate, is primarily prescribed for the management of glaucoma and ocular hypertension. As a selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist, it decreases fluid production in the eye and increases fluid drainage, effectively lowering elevated intraocular pressure. This mechanism prevents damage to the optic nerve, which can lead to vision loss. Brimonidine is available as eye drops and is used in the affected eye(s) as directed.

Additional information

Usage

It is important to use brimonidine eye drops precisely as an eye care professional prescribes. The general instructions for usage are as follows: ● Wash your hands thoroughly before applying the drops. ● Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket. ● Hold the dropper above the eye, squeeze a drop, and then close your eye. ● To prevent the medication from draining out, press your finger to the corner of your eye, near the nose, for a minute or so. ● If you are to apply more than one drop in the same eye, wait about 5 minutes before applying the next drop. The typical dosage is one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart. Do not use the drops more frequently than prescribed, as the effectiveness of brimonidine can decrease with overuse.

Side Effects

Keep all medications out of the reach of children and pets. Properly dispose of any eye drops that are outdated or no longer needed.

Special Precautions

Before using brimonidine, inform your eye care professional if you have: ● Any allergies, especially to brimonidine or any other alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonists ● A history of heart disease, blood pressure issues, or circulation problems ● Depression or other mental health issues Because brimonidine eye drops may cause drowsiness or dizziness, caution is advised when driving, using machinery, or doing anything that requires alertness.

Overdose

An overdose of brimonidine in the eye is unlikely to occur or lead to serious symptoms. However, if the medication is ingested, it can cause symptoms such as low body temperature, slow heart rate, and drowsiness. In the event of ingestion or suspecting an overdose, seek emergency medical assistance immediately.
