EpiPen (epinephrine auto-injector) is a life-saving medication used for the emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis can result from allergies to food, insect stings, drugs, or other triggers. EpiPen acts quickly to constrict blood vessels, relax smooth muscles in the lungs to improve breathing, stimulate the heartbeat, and work to reverse hives and swelling around the face and lips. It is available in two strengths: EpiPen for individuals weighing 30kg (approximately 66 lbs) or more and EpiPen Jr for those weighing between 15kg (33 lbs) and 30kg (66 lbs).

Additional information

Usage

Indications: EpiPen is indicated for the immediate treatment of anaphylactic reactions for those at risk or with a history of severe allergic reactions.

Patients are advised to:

● Use EpiPen immediately at the first signs of a severe allergic reaction.
● Inject into the middle of the outer thigh (through clothing if necessary), holding the device in place for 3 seconds after activation.
● Seek emergency medical help immediately after use, as further medical treatment is often required

Side Effects

● Fast, irregular, or “pounding” heartbeat
● Sweating
● Nausea and vomiting
● Breathing difficulties
● Pale skin
● Dizziness, weakness, or headache
● Shaking or tremors

More serious side effects that require immediate medical attention may include:

● Increased blood pressure
● Chest pain
● Severe headache
● Blurred vision
● Seizures

Storage

EpiPens should be stored at room temperature, between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), away from light and moisture. Do not refrigerate or freeze. The auto-injector should be kept in its protective case and regularly checked for discoloration or particles in the liquid, which indicates it is time to replace the device.

Special Precautions

Before using an EpiPen, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have:

● A history of heart disease
● High blood pressure
● Thyroid problems
● Diabetes
● A pregnancy, as epinephrine, can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.

Patients should also inform their healthcare provider if they are:

● Taking any other forms of medication, especially medications for asthma, to avoid potential adverse drug interactions.

Overdose

Due to the controlled dose administered by the EpiPen, overdose is rare but can occur, particularly if multiple doses are administered for a single anaphylactic event. Symptoms of an overdose may include extremely high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, and seizures. Immediate medical attention is critical in the case of an overdose.

● Keep the EpiPen with you at all times in case of an emergency, and ensure that you and those around you know how to use it.
● Regularly check the expiration date on your EpiPen and replace it before it expires.
● Consider wearing medical identification to inform others of your allergy and the potential need for an EpiPen.
