Ezetimibe belongs to a class of lipid-lowering compounds that selectively inhibit the intestinal absorption of cholesterol and related phytosterols. By targeting the Niemann-Pick C1-like 1 (NPC1L1) protein, which is responsible for cholesterol absorption in the intestine, ezetimibe effectively reduces the amount of cholesterol entering the bloodstream.

Description

10 mg 100 Tablets

Ezetimibe is an oral cholesterol-lowering medication that is used to treat high cholesterol. It works differently from statins, which are another common group of cholesterol-lowering drugs. Ezetimibe helps reduce the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed by the intestines from the diet, leading to lower levels of blood cholesterol.

Additional information

Usage

Indications:

Ezetimibe is indicated for:

● Use along with a low-fat and low-cholesterol diet to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fatty substances in the blood.
● Treatment of high cholesterol and other lipid disorders, such as mixed hyperlipidemia.
● Concurrent use with statins in patients who need further cholesterol reduction than achieved with diet and statins alone.

Patients are advised to:

● Take one 10 mg tablet once daily, with or without food.
● Maintain a cholesterol-lowering diet while on ezetimibe.
● Continue taking Ezetimibe even if cholesterol levels have improved unless directed otherwise by a healthcare provider.

Precautions:

● Ezetimibe should not be used in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to any of its components.
● Liver function tests should be performed before starting treatment and according to healthcare provider recommendations thereafter.
● Ezetimibe is not recommended for people with moderate to severe liver disease.

Side Effects

● Headache
● Diarrhea
● Muscle pain
● Upper respiratory tract infection

More serious side effects that require immediate medical attention may include:

● Severe muscle pain or weakness, which could be signs of muscle problems such as myopathy or rhabdomyolysis, especially when ezetimibe is used with a statin.
● Liver enzyme abnormalities
● Allergic reactions such as rash, angioedema, and urticaria

Storage

● Store the tablets at 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F); excursions permitted to 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F).
● Keep the medication in its original bottle to protect it from moisture.
● Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children.

Special Precautions

Before initiating treatment with ezetimibe, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have:

● A history of liver disease or alcohol abuse, as ezetimibe, may affect liver function.
● Any ongoing muscle pain or weakness, as this medication can, on rare occasions, lead to serious muscle conditions.

Before starting the medication, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they are:

● Taking any other medications, over-the-counter drugs, herbal supplements, or vitamins, as drug interactions may occur.
● Pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. The safety of ezetimibe in pregnancy and breastfeeding is unknown, and therefore it should only be used if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant.

Overdose

While an overdose of ezetimibe is unlikely to be life-threatening, excessive amounts of the drug could potentially enhance its side effects. If an overdose is suspected, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic since no specific antidote for ezetimibe overdose exists.
