Indications:
● Gallstone Dissolution: Urso is indicated for the treatment of patients with radiolucent, noncalcified gallbladder stones less than 20 mm in maximal diameter in whom elective cholecystectomy would be undertaken except for the presence of increased surgical risk due to systemic disease, advanced age, idiosyncratic reaction to anesthesia, or other issues making surgery risky.
● Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC): It is also prescribed for managing patients with primary biliary cirrhosis, especially in the early stages of the disease.
Administration Guidelines
Dosage:
● The dosage of Urso will depend on the condition being treated, the patient's weight, and the doctor's prescription. For gallstone dissolution, a typical dose might range between 8-10 mg/kg/day, often taken in two divided doses. In PBC treatment, dosage may vary but follows a similar guideline based on body weight.
Method of Administration:
● Oral Tablet: Urso should be taken orally, with or without food. Taking the medication with food or milk may reduce discomfort if stomach upset occurs.
Dosage Form:
● Available in tablets or capsules for oral use. The strength of Ursodiol in Urso typically ranges from 250mg to 500mg.
Safety Preclusions
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
● The safety of Urso during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not fully established. It should be used during pregnancy only if needed and after carefully assessing the benefits and risks.
Drug Interactions:
● Urso can interact with other medications, including bile acid sequestering agents like cholestyramine, which can interfere with its absorption and efficacy. Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications you're taking.
