Indications:
● Acute Treatment of Migraine: Zomig is used for quick relief from migraine attacks, whether they are accompanied by an aura or not. It is not intended for the prophylactic therapy of migraine or the management of cluster headaches.
Administration Guidelines
Dosage:
● Zolmitriptan is typically prescribed in dosages of 2.5 mg or 5 mg per attack. If the first dose does not completely alleviate the migraine or if the migraine returns within 24 hours, the patient's response and tolerability can influence a possible additional dose.
● The total daily dose mustn't exceed 10 mg.
Method of Administration:
● Oral: Zomig is available in regular tablets and orally disintegrating tablets. Regular tablets should be swallowed whole with water, while orally disintegrating tablets should be placed on the tongue and allowed to dissolve without water.
● Nasal Spray: Available for those who may experience nausea or vomiting during migraines.
Dosage Form:
● Tablets: Commonly available in 2.5 mg and 5 mg dosages.
● Orally Disintegrating Tablets: Ideal for patients with difficulty swallowing or when water is unavailable.
● Nasal Spray: Provides an alternative administration route that can be beneficial during severe migraines.
Safety Preclusions
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:
● Use Zomig with caution during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. The effects of zolmitriptan on the developing fetus are not fully known.
● Zolmitriptan can be excreted into breast milk, so caution should be advised when administered to breastfeeding mothers.
Drug Interactions:
● Zolmitriptan can interact with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), other triptans, and certain antidepressants (SSRIs and SNRIs). These interactions can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening condition.
