Carbamazepine is a widely used medication for the management of seizure disorders, such as epilepsy, and for the treatment of certain types of nerve pain, including trigeminal neuralgia. It is also prescribed for bipolar disorder to control episodes of mania. Belonging to a class of drugs known as anticonvulsants or antiepileptic drugs, carbamazepine works by decreasing nerve impulses that cause seizures and pain. This medication is available in various forms, including tablets, chewable tablets, and extended-release (long-acting) capsules and tablets, and requires a prescription and the supervision of a healthcare provider.
