Indications:
Lamotrigine is indicated for:
● The treatment of partial seizures, primary and secondary tonic-clonic seizures, and the seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome in adults and children.
● Maintenance therapy for bipolar I disorder to delay the time to the occurrence of mood episodes in adults aged 18 and older experiencing predominantly depressive episodes.
Patients are advised to:
● Follow the dosing instructions provided by their healthcare provider strictly.
● Be aware of the potential for serious skin rashes and report any skin changes to a healthcare provider immediately.
● Slowly titrate up under the guidance of a healthcare provider to minimize the risk of side effects.
Administration:
● Taken orally, with or without food.
● The dosage is carefully adjusted according to the patient’s response and presence of side effects.
Precautions:
● Patients with a history of allergy to lamotrigine or its components should not use this medication.
● Lamotrigine may cause severe skin reactions, especially when the initial dosage titration is not followed properly.
● Inform healthcare providers about all medications being taken, as lamotrigine can interact with other drugs, altering its plasma levels.
Drug Interactions:
● Lamotrigine's metabolism can be affected by other medications, either increasing its toxicity or reducing its effectiveness.
● Valproate significantly increases the concentration of lamotrigine, while phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, and primidone decrease its levels.
