Serevent Diskus is designed for inhalation use only. It works by attaching to beta2-receptors in the lungs, causing the muscles to relax and prevent bronchospasm for an extended period. Unlike quick-relief inhalers, Serevent Diskus is not intended for relieving acute episodes of bronchospasm or asthma attacks.
Serevent Diskus is a prescription medication used as a long-term maintenance treatment for asthma and to prevent bronchospasm in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It contains the active ingredient salmeterol xinafoate, which is a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA) that assists in relaxing the muscles around the airways in the lungs to improve breathing.
| Usage | Indications: ● Maintenance treatment of asthma and prevention of bronchospasm in patients 4 years of age and older. ● Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm (EIB) in patients 4 years and older. ● Maintenance treatment of airflow obstruction and reducing exacerbations in patients with COPD. Administration Guidelines: ● Serevent Diskus should be used twice daily (morning and evening) about 12 hours apart. ● The Diskus device delivers a measured dose of medication and must be used according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer. ● It should not be used as a rescue inhaler to treat sudden symptoms. Dosage Forms: ● Serevent Diskus is a dry powder inhaler containing blister packs of the powder formulation of salmeterol xinafoate. Each actuation delivers 50 micrograms of salmeterol (as the xinafoate salt). Safety Preclusions Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: ● Serevent Diskus should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. ● It is not known whether salmeterol is excreted in human milk; caution should be exercised when administered to nursing women. Long-term Use: ● Patients using Serevent Diskus for chronic conditions should be regularly evaluated and monitored for appropriate therapy adjustments. Drug Interactions: ● Beta-blockers may diminish the bronchodilatory effect of LABAs like salmeterol. ● Use caution with co-administration of other adrenergic drugs as they may potentiate the effects of salmeterol. |

| Overdose | ● An overdose of Serevent Diskus can lead to clinically significant prolongation of the QTc interval, which can produce ventricular arrhythmias. Other potential symptoms include chest pain, palpitations, tremor, and hyperglycemia. If an overdose is suspected, medical attention should be sought, as supportive and symptomatic treatment may be required. |
