Tobradex is a prescription medication that combines two active ingredients: tobramycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, and dexamethasone, a corticosteroid. It is indicated for treating certain eye infections accompanied by inflammation. Tobradex combats bacterial infections while reducing associated symptoms such as swelling, redness, and itching.

Additional information

Usage

Indications:

● Bacterial Eye Infections with Inflammation: Used to treat eye infections that are inflammatory and caused by bacteria susceptible to tobramycin. It is also sometimes prescribed after eye surgery to prevent infection and manage inflammation.

Administration Guidelines

Dosage:

● Dosage and duration of treatment with Tobradex are based on the severity of the infection and the patient’s response to therapy. The recommended dose for the eye drops is one or two drops into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) every 4 to 6 hours. The dosage may be increased in severe infections to 1-2 drops every 2 hours.

Method of Administration:

● Eye Drops: They should be instilled directly into the eye. The patient should lean back and use his finger to pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket. The bottle should be held above the eye, and the drops should be squeezed out as prescribed.

● Ointment: Apply a small amount (approximately 1/2 inch ribbon) into the conjunctival sac(s) up to three or four times daily or as directed by a healthcare provider.

Dosage Form:

● Available as an ophthalmic ointment and eye drops.

Safety Preclusions

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

● The safety of Tobradex during pregnancy and breastfeeding is not fully established. It should be used only when needed and after a risk/benefit assessment by a healthcare provider.
