Fludrocortisone Acetate is a synthetic corticosteroid that mimics the actions of aldosterone, a hormone naturally produced by the adrenal glands that helps regulate salt and water balance in the body. Its primary role is in maintaining sodium and helping to excrete potassium, which in turn controls blood volume and blood pressure.

Florinef Acetate, with the active ingredient fludrocortisone acetate, is a medication principally used in the management of adrenocortical insufficiency, such as Addison’s Disease. It has potent mineralocorticoid properties and a slight glucocorticoid effect, making it effective in managing conditions that require the replacement of these hormones.

Additional information

Florinef Acetate is indicated for:

● Treatment of primary adrenocortical insufficiency (Addison's Disease).
● Management of the salt-losing forms of congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
● As a part of combination therapy in secondary adrenocortical insufficiency (such as due to pituitary disease).

Patients are advised to:

● Typically, start with a dose of 0.1 mg taken once daily, although the dosage may vary based on individual needs and health status.
● Regularly monitor blood pressure, serum potassium levels, and overall electrolyte balance.
● Never stop taking Florinef Acetate suddenly without the advice and guidance of a healthcare provider.

● Florinef Acetate should be used with caution in patients with a history of severe heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney disease, or current/previous infections.
● Patients with a history of tuberculosis, thyroid issues, or stomach/intestinal problems should use this medication with caution.
● It is not recommended for use in individuals with untreated systemic fungal infections.

Side Effects

● Hypertension (high blood pressure)
● Edema (swelling due to fluid retention)
● Heart enlargement
● Hypokalemia (low potassium levels)

More serious side effects that require immediate medical attention may include:

● Severe allergic reactions
● Symptoms of too much fluid and electrolyte imbalance (such as weakness, confusion, heart rhythm disturbances)
● Signs of infection (e.g., fever, sore throat) due to its immunosuppressive effect

● Store the tablets at controlled room temperature, 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F), away from moisture and light.
● Keep Florinef Acetate in its original packaging and ensure the bottle is tightly closed to prevent air exposure.
● Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.

Special Precautions

Before starting treatment with Florinef Acetate, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have:

● Any history of severe infections, diabetes mellitus, or psychological conditions, as the use of Florinef may exacerbate these conditions.
● Osteoporosis or other conditions that cause bone weakness.

Patients should also inform their healthcare provider if they are:

● Taking any other medications, including NSAIDs, antifungal agents, and certain antibiotics, as interactions may occur.
● Pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. The safety of fludrocortisone in pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been fully established.

Cases of overdose with Florinef Acetate can lead to exacerbated side effects, including severe hypertension, hypokalemia, and fluid overload. If an overdose is suspected, medical intervention is crucial. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic, focusing on correcting electrolyte imbalances and addressing any cardiovascular complications.
