Pimecrolimus, the active ingredient in Elidel Cream, inhibits calcineurin, an enzyme key in activating T-cells in the immune system. This reduces inflammatory responses, a characteristic feature of atopic dermatitis.

Elidel (pimecrolimus) Cream, 1%, is a topical medication classified as a topical calcineurin inhibitor (TCI). It treats mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (eczema) in patients not adequately responsive to or intolerant of other conventional therapies. Unlike traditional corticosteroids, Elidel is not associated with certain adverse effects like skin atrophy, making it a valuable treatment option for areas with thin skin.

Additional information

Indications: Elidel Cream is indicated for:

● Short-term and non-continuous chronic treatment of mild to moderate atopic dermatitis in non-immunocompromised adults and children 2 years of age and older.
● It can be used on all skin areas, including the face and neck.

Patients are advised to:

● Apply a thin layer of Elidel Cream to the affected skin twice daily.
● Rub in the cream gently and completely.
● Avoid contact with eyes and mouth.
● Limit sun exposure during the treatment due to the potential increased risk of skin tumours.
● Do not use the medication continuously for a long-term basis.

Side Effects

● Localized burning or sensation of warmth at the application site
● Headache
● Nasopharyngitis

More serious side effects that require immediate medical attention may include:

● Severe burning of the skin
● Swollen glands (lymph nodes)
● Signs of a skin infection (such as honey-colored crusting)
● Rare: possibly increased risk of certain types of skin cancer and lymphoma

Elidel Cream should be stored at room temperature, between 15°C and 30°C (59°F and 86°F), away from light and moisture. Like all medications, it should be kept out of the reach of children and pets.

Special Precautions

Patients should inform their healthcare provider if they have:

● Before starting this medication, a weakened immune system or skin conditions other than atopic dermatitis.
● Any skin infections, as Elidel, can exacerbate existing infections.
● An allergy to pimecrolimus or any of the cream's ingredients.

Before initiating treatment, patients should disclose to their healthcare provider if they are:

● Pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding – potential risks to the fetus or child must be weighed against the benefits.
● Taking any other forms of medication to avoid potential adverse drug interactions.

Overdose with Elidel Cream is unlikely due to its topical use; however, medical attention should be sought if the cream is ingested orally. Symptoms of an excessive topical application might include widespread application site reactions such as severe burning sensation or itching.
